We will explore and discuss ideas of how to set up a Discussion-Based Learning Environment in a mathematics classroom. Participants will be able to experience and/or observe such classroom in action, and walk away with ideas and materials of how to get started, including rubrics and assessment possibilities. We will address issues of class-size, teacher preparation, materials curation, and day-to-day scenarios of potential lessons.

Teaching and learning have been my number one priority for fourteen years now and counting, starting in my first year of university. In my professional career I have taught at Simon Fraser University as a teaching assistant, in the Surrey, Burnaby and Nanaimo School Districts and in the independent school system at Southridge School. I have developed courses, taught summer school, implemented technology, created alternative assessment methods, conducted classroom research, presented at conferences, created and organized outreach activities, published books, articles and projects, mentored student teachers, and stayed closely connected with the education community in British Columbia. In addition, I'm an educational consultant working and mentoring teachers and students in discussion-based approach to teaching and learning and contemplative practices in the classroom.
