Fostering Math Engagement and Belonging Through Music

Music is foundational for students' sense of identity and belonging. YouthBeat leverages these qualities to help students feel a similar sense of belonging about math. YouthBeat is a discovery-based music learning platform that includes more than a dozen meaningful math activities. As students explore the building blocks of music, they gain fresh entry points to fractions, percentages, unit rates, and other math concepts. Designed for generalist and math teachers.

Presenter

  • Shaun Elder

Shaun Elder is Executive Director of the Royal Conservatory's arts integration program, Learning Through the Arts, and creator of the YouthBeat music learning platform. Shaun partnered with Peel Region math specialist Carol Shiffman to leverage the YouthBeat platform to support hands-on learning of fractions, decimals, percentages, unit rates, and other concepts that involve proportional reasoning. Teachers have found it is especially engaging for hard-to-reach students who are into music!
