Reach and Engage Every Learner in Your Kindergarten through Grade 2 Class

New to teaching in younger grades or want to explore new ways to freshen up your math class? I'll share classroom routines I use to engage every learner in my room. We'll explore tasks designed to build number sense, approaches for open-ended problem-solving, ways to contextualize math through a STEM lens, and how to bring math outdoors. Activities are purposefully selected to be low floor, high ceiling and encourage everyone to challenge themselves. I will also show how I create math kits for each student.

I teach Kindergarten-Grade 1 at St. Margaret's School, an independent school in Victoria, BC. Our school is focused on STEM, outdoor learning, and sustainability, and I use those lenses when planning. I encourage my young learners to embrace a growth mindset, and engage with hands-on tasks that are connected to the real world when possible. I have explored many routines and approaches over the years and am eager to share my favourites with you.
